The Sales Rollercoaster
What's the biggest advice you have for someone getting into sales?
I've been asked this question a lot recently.
Here's my answer -
DO NOT RIDE the "sales rollercoaster".
The inevitable highs and lows of sales.
In sales, you will win a ton and you will lose a ton. You are a human with emotions who will react in certain ways to both the good and unfortunately the bad.
This is why people say the best time to close a sale is right after you just closed another sale since you are the most confident, assumptive, and positive version of yourself.
But, you are bound to get hung up on and rejected. You will lose. That's sales. It doesn't feel good. AND if you let those lows take control, you have just opened the floodgates for the opposite effect. It becomes the worst time to close a sale. You speak with less confidence. Everything you say is now under the influence, and you've created the formula for a slump.
I first heard about this portrayal of sales during my first sales role. Even after I was trained on the negative consequences of riding it, it was waiting for me to hop on. I hopped right on. I was fortunate to be pulled aside and coached off of it immediately.
If you are in sales, the rollercoaster is always waiting for you.
Don’t ride it.
